The Detroit Series 60 was one of the first heavy-duty diesels with integrated electronic engine controls, and it earned a reputation for outstanding fuel economy and longevity. Offered in 11.1L, 12.7L and 14.0L displacements, it powered millions of Class 8 trucks. Used and remanufactured Series 60 engines remain in steady demand because so many of these trucks are still working, and the core supply keeps replacement pricing competitive.

The DD platform replaced the Series 60 and is built around amplified common-rail fuel injection and integrated aftertreatment. The DD13 is a lighter 12.8-liter engine suited to regional and vocational work; the DD15 is the high-volume 14.8-liter line-haul engine found in a huge share of Freightliner Cascadia tractors; and the DD16 is the 15.6-liter big-bore for heavy-haul and severe-duty applications.
