The gas side of the Volvo Penta lineup is built largely around GM-based small-block V6 and V8 castings that Volvo Penta marinizes with its own cooling, exhaust, EFI and electronics. Popular families include the 4.3 V6 and the 5.0, 5.7 and 6.2-liter V8s in carbureted (GL/GS) and fuel-injected (Gi/GiL/GXi) forms, mated to SX single-prop or DuoProp counter-rotating outdrives.

They are available in both sterndrive (often DuoProp) and straight-inboard configurations and are prized for their compact footprint.
